Island in the Sky Competitive Trail Ride    Type A (2 day ride)                                     August 2-3, 2008

High above Grand Junction at the top of Grand Mesa in Grand Mesa National Forest               Rider Limit 60

Give yourself a treat and come ride the Mesa.  This is the land of lakes, some 350 of them.  Ride through  Spruce and Aspen forests, around beautiful lakes and lush, alpine meadows.  This is the summer pasture for huge elk, deer and cattle herds and the views are wonderful.  Located just south of Grand Junction, Grand Mesa rises abruptly to an elevation of 10,000 feet and a whole different, alpine world. Bring your fishing poles if you fish, there are lakes full of trout everywhere. We recommend horses have hoof protection as the trail has rocky sections (this is the Rocky Mountains).

Benefit --  This ride will benefit the Surface Creek Saddle Club Arena Remodel.  Any donations to the silent auction will be gratefully accepted.

DIRECTIONS TO CAMP - From HW 70 take (exit 49) HW 65 to 330 go ½ mile to Colbran. In Colbran catch CR58.5/10 (across from Elm) south for 2 miles to”T”turn left (NE road) for ½ mile then right (south) on HW 59 for 8 miles to forest road 260.  Turn left; follow 269 then 279 then 279.1A (total from left turn about 2 miles) to camp.  Debeque cutoff from I-70 works too, but is twisty.

From Highway 50 in Delta, turn east on Highway 92, go four miles, turn north on highway 65 through Cedaredge (11 miles) and climb to the top of the mesa (about 15 miles).  Turn right at the visitor center on 121 (Trickle park road) and go about 13 miles.  This turns into a good, gravel road and passes numerous beautiful lakes.  If you can make it in the daylight you will really enjoy the views.  Turn right and follow forest road 260, then 279 then 279.1A about 2 miles to camp.  We will mark the turns.  If you start going down a big hill, you went too far.  A short cut from this direction is about ½ way up the mesa on HW 65 turn right on Old Grand Mesa road (good gravel) and you will come out on Trickle Park road past most of the lakes.
