The San Juan Valley Trail Riders invite you to ride the 34th annual Navajo Lake Ride, 2nd Annual Bill Smith Memorial, on Mother’s Day weekend.  This beautiful ride will traverse the varied terrain of mesas, arroyos and pinon forests in the spectacularly scenic area around the Navajo Lake Dam.  Come to enjoy the fun, especially our famous “Mother’s Day Trail” filled with surprises!

Directions to Camp:  The camp is located on NM State Hwy 539 approximately 3/4 mile south of Navajo Dam. When approaching from Albuquerque and Bloomfield, travel east on U. S. 64 to mile 85, then turn north on NM 539 five miles to camp. From Colorado, take CO 172 south through Ignacio to NM 511 and south to Navajo Dam, then south on NM 539 to camp.

Camp Facilities:  Water for horses will be available.  Bring your own drinking water.  Nights are usually cool so plan to blanket your horse.  Two restaurants and a small grocery store are located 8 miles from camp.  Emergency phone:  Navajo Lake Visitor Center 505-632-2278 (day) or 505-632-2207 (night).

Rules:  This ride will be conducted under current NATRC rules.  We will be offering the Distance Only class for those of you who wish to complete the ride for mileage only.  New Mexico state law requires that out-of-state horses have current Coggins and health papers.

Schedule:  Pre-ride vet check-in from 2 PM until dark on Friday, May 9, 2008.  A special First Time Competitor meeting will be held after briefing Friday night.  Each evening riders will be given maps and briefing for the following day’s trails.  Saturday lunch will be on the trail.  Sunday lunch will be in camp after completion of the ride.

Meals:  A potluck dinner will be held on Saturday evening after the vet check and before briefing.  All other meals are on your own.

 


Awards:  There will be 1st through 6th place awards in all divisions, Open and Novice Sweepstakes, CP Highpoint Combined.  Send a copy of horse registration papers for breed awards.  Awards will be on Sunday afternoon as soon as possible!
