COMPETITIVE TRAIL RIDE

Ride With Us! Purgatory is the old El Jinete ride. We just
changed the name. This is one of the
most popular rides in Region 3. The
views of the San Juan Mountains are spectacular and breathtaking. The wildlife sightings include bear, deer,
and elk. Ride the old stage coach trail
that takes you up to unbelievable views and terrain. You don’t want to miss this ride -- join us
for the trail ride experience of a lifetime!

Trail: This trail traverses beautiful mountain
country with elevations ranging from 7,000 feet to 10,000 feet. There are plenty of clean mountain streams
for watering horses. The trails are
challenging but worth the effort.
Well-conditioned horses will have no problems negotiating the
terrain. Novice and CP will ride
approximately 20 miles each day at 3-4 mph pace. Open will ride 30 miles on Saturday and 20
miles on Sunday at 4-5 mph pace. Hoof protection is recommended.
Directions
to Camp: Camp will be in a meadow behind the Purgatory
Ski Area. The campsite is 25 miles north of Durango on U.S. Hwy 550. Turn into the ski area (west) entrance and
follow the signs to Hermosa Park Road.
Follow that road to the large meadow on left. Horse water available in the stream next to
the campsite. Bring your own “People”
water. Certified Weed-free hay required by USFS. Dogs must be on a leash at
all times. No motorcycles in camp. No Campfires, so bring a stove. Nights can be cold, bring a blanket for your

Saturday Night -- Cowboy Prom! Saturday night, come dressed in your
outrageous cowboy and cowgirl outfits, think John Wayne/Hollywood cowboy duds
from the ‘30s - ‘50s – think pink crinolin square
dance petticoats, pink boots, purple silk bandanas,
boots on the outside of the pants. Think Retro, be creative! You’ll have fun, and will dine with us Sat.
evening for free if you’re dressed for the occasion! No shirt, No boots,
No Grub. There will be a Prize for the best DUDS!
Schedule: Pre-ride vet check starts at 3 PM Friday,
July 18 until dark. A
special First Time Competitor meeting will be held at 5:00 pm on Friday
evening. Trail briefings held on Friday and
Saturday evenings to acquaint all riders with next day’s trails.
Meals: We’ll have a Pot Luck on Friday evening,
bring your favorite dish. Saturday
evening, we’ll have a Chuckwagon dinner, served to those
in Costume! The only charge for dinner will be your attire: No shirt, No
boots, No grub!
Awards: Awards will be given 1st-6th
places in all divisions and classes. Open and Novice Sweepstakes awards will be
given and High-point Combined awarded for CP.
